The Pacific islands led the way at the thirteenth conference of the convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP13) holding a side event on day one of the global conference. The Pacific Protected Areas Portal (PIPAP) was a big component of the activities showcased towards implementation of Aichi Targets, together with work undertaken by the European Union, Samoa, Fiji, Australia and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

A country engagement mission was recently completed to the Kingdom of Tonga to initiate national activities of the Pacific Islands Protected Areas Portal (PIPAP). This was one of several country missions conducted to consult and engage key stakeholders on protected area management.

The BIOPAMA organized an assessment workshop on the use of monitoring, planning and IMET / COMIT capacity-building tools, with 11 coaches and key Program experts. The event took place in Douala, in November 17-19, 2016. With 69 protected areas supported, 250 national agency executives coming from 12 countries, and a recipient satisfaction rate of over 80%, the group was able to make an assessment of the elements to be improved for the next phase of funding.

A new publication on what drives effectiveness in protected areas has been published recently. It is a joint effort of many authors and part of the work of the Joint Task Force on Biodiversity and Protected Areas of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas and Species Survival Commission and supported by BIOPAMA.
